In women, virilization can occur, which results in male characteristics such as a deeper voice and increased body and facial hair. This can be distressing and may be irreversible even after stopping the drug. Digestive issues, bloating, oily skin, acne and hair loss are other possible side effects.

Long-term use of anabolic androgenic steroids can also increase the risk of blood clots, which can lead to serious health conditions such as pulmonary embolism or heart attacks. Symptoms of blood clots include sudden limb swelling, severe headache or dizziness. Anavar may interfere with blood sugar levels in people with diabetes, so regular monitoring of blood glucose is recommended. It can also increase the risk of edema (fluid retention) in people with preexisting kidney or heart problems.
